Anybody played borderlands? - Lets Beef

I'm trying to get past sledge. I heard I needed to be at least a level 17 to get by him, but I'm only a level 12 right now. Is there some sort of secret how to beat this asshole without having to be a level 17? *Don't want to walk that long ass path back to Fyrestone with all them Skags and Psycho's and shit along the way as I don't have an insane amount of bullets.
