Something I stumbled upon..
Definition Of A Body Bag
So there’s three terms that are overly used in todays battle culture: Body bag, Classic and Top Tier. I feel the majority of the time, these phrases are used way too often and definitely when they shouldn‘t be. Now as I said in my last two blogs, I’ve never claimed to be a battle rap guru, or the end all be all in battle rap discussion. But I have been a avid, loyal and all around huge fan of the battle rap culture ever since I was little. With that, I have my thoughts and opinions when it comes to the sport, from a point of view some people my not be looking from, so I choose to voice it. I‘ve broken down both what a classic battle is and what a top tier is. So last but not least, in my opinion, this is the definition of a body bag….
What’s A Body Bag
A Body Bag is an ass whoopin every round of a battle. In a Body Bag, there isn’t a debatable round, close round or anything to that extent. The battler that's doin the body baggin is on fire and is consistent throughout the WHOLE battle. Hittin his opponent with continuous bars, punchines, schemes and probably some personals and jokes as well, while being original. A Body Bag is when there’s no hope for one of the two MC’s. No matter what move they pull nothing is working. It’s just not their night, and they’re not coming with anything strong. Or maybe they are. The MC getting bodied could very well have some good bars, but what his opponent is sayin is too crazy. Beatin him line for line and attacking from every angle possible. A good example of that would be Serius Jones Vs Jin. Jin did have a few good lines. But NOONE remembers them because Jones performance was so out of this world.
The Performance
A Body Bag isn’t as much about both battlers as it is about the one doin the bodying. A Body Bag isn’t a good battle, it’s one MC having an incredible performance. The performance is simply remarkable. Probably halfway through the battle, the crowd knows it’s over, but we’re still watching to see what else they have to say. And if there are any lines in there rounds that ain’t punches, real shit or personals, there build up bars. In fact, I’m using the term “battle” very loosely. Because a battle means both sides coming to fight. But during a Body, one side clearly is there to get killed. And when people rewatch the battle, they completely skip each round by whoever’s getting bodied.
What’s NOT A Body Bag
When battles drop, I tend to read the comments on the battles, just to see where the fans (such as myself) minds are at. And from time to time, I tend to see some real ridiculous shit like “Dope battle 2-1 such and such for the body bag” or “Damn that battle was classic, it was close but whats his name bodied him.” To me, that’s equivalent to “Yo that battle was crazy, but it was whack.” To say a battle was good or it was back and forth at any point and call that a body bag, doesn't make sense. To honestly feel like a rapper is getting bodied is a heavy statement. Some careers never comeback from a body. And the ones that do, have to have a number of great showings to make people forget.
Here’s the thing, there’s a difference between a clear 3-0 or a battler winning each round and a Body Bag. A clear 3-0 (or 2-0 or 1-0 however many rounds they’re going) could still be a good battle. Where both MC’s are doing there thing, but one is just better all 3 rounds. That’s NOT a Body. A clear win or 3-0 doesn’t automatically mean a Body Bag. Even a bad 3-0 is a step or two below getting bodied, just my opinion though.
But beating an opponent all rounds isn’t enough. YOU have to be on your A+ game. If you do just good, average or ok and your opponent doesn’t show up, that’s not a body bag. It’s just another 3-0 battle that’s nothing special. You have to make the people watching feel like "Damn, not many people couldv'e survived that." As I said in the past we can't use the term "classic" so often. And to say you bodied someone, your performance can't be good or great, it has to be classic.
1 Round Body
It’s possible to have a good battle where someone was bodied in a round, but a 3-0 Body Bag is a whole nother story. Good example, the recent battle between K-Shine and DNA. K-Shine 3rd was one of the best rounds we’ve heard in a while, and considered the best all year so far. There was nothing DNA could’ve said or done to beat that, and by him coming with a scheme the crowd didn’t feel to follow up, definitely made it look worse. K-Shine bodied him in the 3rd, but the battle as a whole wasn’t a Body Bag.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Murda Mook. He’s a battle rap legend, one of the best to ever do it and if there’s ever a battle rap hall of fame (which I strongly believe there will be one day) he’ll probably be one of the first names inducted. But I couldn’t disagree with him more when he said no one wants to watch a battle where one person isn’t fighting back as he referred to his battle vs. Iron Solomon. The fans love to see Bodys. Like boxing, the fans love to see someone get they ass kicked and knocked out. All it takes is one rapper to do there thing and come correct to keep the fans watching.
The meaning of these definition blogs were simple. Battle Rap is the only form of Hip Hop that after all this time isn’t commercialized or watered down. The terms classic, top tier and body bag hold a lot of weight in the battle culture, and shouldn’t be thrown around at every given chance. Every 3-0 isn’t a body bag. Every good battle isn’t a classic. A classic battle is something special and should be treated as such. And battlers work very hard and put in timeless hours for a long time to become top tier. Calling any good battler a top tier is disrespectful. If people continue to call every thing a body bag, it'll lose it's true meaning. And the newer fans just being to put on to battle rap won't know a classic from an ok battle. Or a body from a debatable one. One of the many reasons I love Hip Hop is because it was bulit on the raw uncut truth. Most of the industry has forgotten this, and I feel that's a major part of why the game is what it is today. We gotta be honest to the fans and the battlers. Just cause their ya favorite battler and clearly won, don't mean he body bagged em. Just like cause two of ya favorites had a good battle, don't mean it was a classic. Whether yall agree with some of what I say, all of what I say or none of what I say, let’s agree on this. To continue to support this culture, and not de-value the most important aspects of it.
Here are just a few examples of a Body Bag:

Murda Mook Vs Young Hot
Charlie Clips Vs Tay Roc
Loaded Lux Vs Young Miles
