But not all atheists beleive god doesn't exist. They simply don't know and don't care. So it's not a religion.

Then they're not an Atheist, they're undecided.

Atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. If I just go about my life with no religious belief I'm an atheist. You don't have to be "There is no such thing as god" to be an atheist.

@ Just C ,
I think you are referring to a form of nihilism rather than atheism. Atheism as a word etymologically suggests a lack of belief that there is a god. So, its safe to think that atheists do not believe in a god or gods.
Nihilism is more on the side of not caring. But, now we are getting down to semantics. RESPECT either way.

That's why I related my quote to a specific type of atheism (so-called 'positive' or 'strong' atheism') where the adherents believe that god does not exist.

Not all atheists are mere non-believers who simply have an absence of belief. Some have a positive belief of their own contrary to religion and believe god does NOT exist and science has proven this yada, yada, yada.

Epistemologically, belief is one of three foundational supports for knowledge. It is presumed that the lack of belief, is the lack of knowledge. Perhaps language has been evolutionarily inherently predicated upon the concept of belief.

The idea that "god does not exist" is a belief...much like any other belief that hasn't been proven. No one has proved that god exists, neither has anyone proved that god does NOT exist. They're both beliefs concerning the nature of god. I'm not talking about people who simply say "I don't believe in a god"...I'm more so talking about people who say "I believe that god does not exist."

The Factual Definition Of Atheism As Being A Doctrine Doesn't Necessarily Support The Lack Of Belief That There Is No God Considering That Atheism At Its Conception Is Aimed At Not Being A Religion.
It Would Be Like Saying The System Of Leaders Of An Organization Against The Concept Of Government Is A Government Just Because They Fall Under The Same Umbrella In Definition.

1. Are You Seriously Insinuating That The Lack Of Belief That There Is A God Is A Negative Belief?
2. Those, Would Not Be True Atheists Then.
