To be pedantic... The "United Kingdom" is a UNION of 4 KINGDOMS; KINGDOMS being seperate COUNTRIES as that's what KINGDOM means; each historically had their own KINGS/QUEENS which made them KINGDOMS; England forcefully invaded Wales & Ireland (William of Orange) in order to unify and control their crowns, before signing the treaty of union with Scotland to do the same. They are 4 countries with one hub of command: Westminster. Even at that Scotland and Ireland boast devolved parliaments, meaning that - outwith war essentially - they govern themselves.
